Hello Oakdale Families & Friends,

This week we begin our new blended learning model until winter break, at which time Canyons Board of Education will determine the duration of this model.  From now until then teachers will prepare 1-2 hours of review work to be completed on Friday.  Teachers have also developed a structured checklist to help you and your students understand what should be done for Friday learning.

Our goal for Friday learning is to provide a review from Monday-Thursdays classwork and can be completed independently or with minimal support.   Should you have any questions or concerns please reach out to your students teacher or myself.

Yesterday, we also began our Free Sack Meals to Fuel Friday’s At-Home Learning.  Our awesome cafeteria staff spent Thursday preparing a sack meal for Breakfast, Lunch and an extra snack for Friday.   The meals are free of charge as long as our Federal Grant remains in place.  Meals are distributed at the end of the day on Thursday to allow for quick refrigeration.

Important things to know

Safety Drill of the Month: Lockdown drill
A lockdown drill is used when there is an immediate threat of violence in or around the school.   The purpose is to minimize visibility while sheltering students, staff and any visitors.

COVID Update: Did you know…Time in quarantine could be cut in half for Canyons students and employees who were wearing masks during the moments they were possibly exposed to COVID-19 while at school.  Under guidelines released by Utah government and education officials on Thursday, Oct. 8, quarantined students and employees who test negative for COVID-19 after the seventh day from their last exposure — and, importantly, only if they were wearing masks at the time of exposure — can return to in-person learning, activities, and work. The previous length of the quarantine as mandated by health authorities was 14 days. Mask Up!

Looking to Switch Learning Options?   Requests Accepted Nov. 1-8   Throughout the pandemic, we have worked to provide families with in-person and remote learning options so they can choose what works best for them given their educational needs and health considerations.   We are committed to this commitment, and knowing circumstances can change we will soon be inviting families to submit end of grading period requests to switch learning options.  Requests will be available Sunday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 8.  whether you want to switch from in-person to one of two remote learning options available or from remote to in-person, will need to submit a change-request by Nov. 8.  No late requests will be accepted.   Learning changes will take place on Monday, Nov. 23.    If you want to stay with your current choice no action is required.

Air Quality :  With our cold season coming soon and with all the smoke in the air with wildfires, Canyons uses the Utah DEQ website to determine whether or not students can go outside.   Should your child suffer from asthma or respiratory issues please call the office to schedule a time to speak with the school nurse about developing a health plan for your child.

Last Week to apply  SALTA Testing: Apply to Test for Placement in Canyons’ Advanced Learning Program It can be difficult to know if your child is a high achiever or exhibiting signs of being a gifted learner. Every child is unique and no two gifted children are alike.  But there are tests to assist parents in determining whether their children would benefit from placement in an educational setting, such as, Canyons School District’s SALTA magnet program for advanced learners.  Students in kindergarten through the seventh grade can apply online to test into the SALTA program starting Monday, Sept. 21 through midnight on Friday, Oct. 16. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept late applications.

PTA Reflections Contest: The Reflections Theme for 2020-2021 is “I Matter Because. . .”.   PTA Reflections welcomes, free of charge, students from all grades and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts.  The entries are due by the cut off date of October 23, 2020 (date change), categories are literature, 2D art, 3D art, film, dance/choreography, Photography, and music.  Please visit the Utah PTA website to enter, parental assistance is required.
