Traditions Around Us

Oakdale Families:

We are planning another great literacy night like the international literacy night we did last year.  Please plan on joining us on March 10th!  Our theme this year will be  “Traditions Around Us” and will give students an opportunity to share their traditions and learn from other students’ traditions.

We would like students at Oakdale to be involved by returning a worksheet that their teacher gave them. On the worksheet each child was asked to share a tradition they have.  We want these to be returned by February 12th.  This can be a tradition from your home or from your ancestors.  We are encouraging all students to learn something about that tradition.  These worksheets will be posted on March 10th for Literacy night.

Here are some ideas for traditions your kids could learn about and associated activities they could do if they sign up for literacy night (a QR code was included to sign up on the worksheet):

  •  A child from a family who has a Scottish background who wears kilts could learn about the different patterns of the kilts and make a game to help others learn what the different kilt patterns mean.
  • A child could learn how to make a food that he/she likes that you make (tortillas, breadsticks, cookies etc).  They could share some small samples and show a short video of themselves making the recipe. If they made tortillas they could use playdough to help others learn how to roll out a tortilla.
  • They could learn how to draw a character from a movie your family likes. Then they could teach other kids how to draw it.
  • They could learn about music that your family likes or how to play something simple.
  • They could demonstrate a dance or sports move they learned.  Then help students learn the dance/move.
  • Learn and share a story you could tell about your ancestors.
